Willkommen! Bienvenue! And Welcome! I’m Helen and in case you missed the cabaret reference, I am a big theatre nerd! I am also a Social Worker who is passionate about helping people learn to live their lives with radical honesty and epic bravery. I think people feel best when they can be their authentic selves. I strive to establish a connection with clients that helps them feel safe, heard, validated, and seen. I value honesty and transparency and strive to reflect this in my practice and daily life. I help people find hope in situations that feel hard or hopeless. I have been around long enough to know that no one gets through this life without experiencing some type of distress or trauma and I truly believe that everyone can use a good therapist at least once in their life!

As a proud member of the queer community, I feel strongly about advocating for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and persons. I am passionate about speaking up and fighting against homophobia and transphobia. I provide gender-affirming, trauma-informed counselling including medical readiness sessions to help prepare for and support after gender-affirming medical care visits. I am trained in a variety of modalities, use an eclectic style, and weave elements of different models together to best suit the person I am working with. I have worked in a variety of different settings with various populations, but I feel most at home within the Queer community.

Assisting parents to deal with the stressors of having children/youth who are struggling is also a passion of mine. I have two neuro-spicy children and know how difficult it can be to parent. As a parent, we all just want what is best for our children but knowing what that is, isn’t always easy and we often face so much judgment from others. I provide support to parents and caregivers that is safe, gentle and non-judgemental.

River is a Mixed-Race (Black, Métis, and Ukrainian) Trans-Masculine Non-Binary person with lived experience of complex trauma, chronic illness & chronic pain, neurodivergence, poverty (generational), and queerness.

River’s lived experience of existing in-between & outside of binaries of race, gender, sexuality, and disability is central to their approach as a therapist. In practicing therapy informed by Indigenous approaches to helping, River believes that strengthening the relationship between themself and the person they’re supporting requires them to share parts of their own life/story as well.

River’s therapeutic approach is rooted in the Mi’kmaw concept of ‘Two-Eyed Seeing’; the bridging of Indigenous & Western knowledges. River applies this through the blending of Indigenous knowledge & practices with Western therapeutic techniques - such as blending Narrative Therapy with Indigenous traditional oral storytelling.

River’s professional background includes community organizing, peer support, and Indigenous mental health. River got their Bachelor of Social Work from McMaster University in 2020 and their Master of Social Work from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2023.

Areas of Focus: - Trauma - Sexuality & gender identity - BIPOC & Mixed-Race Identities - Youth/adolescent issues - Non-traditional relationships including non-monogamy & kink dynamics - Neurodivergence (Autism Spectrum, ADHD) - Chronic illness & Chronic Pain

Therapy Approaches/Modalities: - Narrative Therapy - Peer Support - Indigenous approaches to helping/therapy - Trauma-informed & Trauma-focused - Internal Family Systems (IFS) - Harm Reduction - Arts-based therapeutic practices
